Sedimentary Rock Layers on a Crater Floor

MRO took this image of the complex, layered sedimentary rocks on the floor of an impact crater north of Eberswalde Crater. There may have been a lake in this crater billions of years ago, and the area was once considered a landing spot for the Mars Science Laboratory. On Mars, sedimentary rocks can be created by wind or water. Places such as Eberswalde Crater, where sedimentary rocks may have been laid down by standing water, are ideal locations to search for evidence of past microbial life if it ever developed on Mars.
