Swift Satellite Tallies Water Production on Mars-Bound Comet
This composite of C/2013 A1 (Siding Spring) merges Swift UVOT images taken between May 27 and 29, 2014.
Social media users are invited to apply for one of up to 50 credentials to attend a one-day NASA Social on Oct. 13, 2014, at the agency’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif.

The NASA Social will highlight two upcoming comet events: the close flyby of Mars by Comet C/2013 A1 Siding Spring on Oct. 19, and the European Space Agency’s on-going Rosetta mission including the planned landing of the Philae probe on comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko in mid-November.

NASA Social participants will spend the day at JPL inside the "mission control" of NASA’s Deep Space Network, where engineers communicate with spacecraft across the solar system.

Participants will have the opportunity to:

-Interact with scientists and engineers on the Rosetta mission as they discuss the goals and challenges of this first-of-its kind mission. Rosetta carries four NASA instruments that will study the comet as it travels through the inner solar system
-Interact with the scientists and engineers from several Mars missions as they discuss comet Siding Spring and the efforts underway to study the comet and protect our Mars spacecraft from the expected dust tail
-Engage in hands-on demonstrations
-Get a behind-the-scenes tour of JPL
-Meet fellow space enthusiasts who are active on social media
-Interact with members of NASA’s social media team

NASA Social participants and their friends and family are also welcome to attend the annual JPL Open House, which takes place on Saturday, Oct. 11, and Sunday, Oct. 12. The free public event, themed “Welcome to Our Universe,” will include exhibits and demonstrations from numerous space missions. An interactive art installation inspired by comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko will also be on display.

NASA Social media accreditation opens Thursday, Sept. 4, and closes on Monday, Sept. 8 at 5 p.m. EDT. All social media accreditation applications will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
