This artwork is etched onto a titanium plate mounted on the upper section of the Mars Perseverance rover’s 7-foot robotic arm. Mars 2020 is the official name of the mission, named for its launch year. Along the right-hand edge of this plate is the first-ever off-planet Product Identification Number, or PIN, similar to the unique Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) commonly found on cars and trucks on Earth. Learn more about how to decode the PIN number.

NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California built and manages operations of the Mars 2020 Perseverance rover for NASA.
